Beautiful Antique Silver Alter Candlestick, Circa 1933 (See listing for history)
Beautiful silver alter candlestick.
Origin unknown, probably French; dated circa 1933.
Fabulously detailed piece which has developed the most remarkable patina over the decades.
There is an inscription to the stem that reads as follows:
'Don de J. Pletch a la Chapelle Oberschlinder, 1933'. This translates as 'Donated by J. Pletch to Chapel Oberschlinder, 1933'.
Chapelle Obcerschlinder or St. Michel as it is referred to; is a chapel in Luxembourg.
The Chapel of St. Michel tells a fascinating story. It was once located in the heart of a thriving village.; today, however, only a few traces of Oberschlinder remain. The last birth took place in 1918 and in 1922 there were only 13 inhabitants. Forced by the Nazis to stand up for them if they did not want to be deported, and looking for hiding places in the surrounding forest bunkers, the last inhabitants left the village just after the Second World War in 1948.
A photo of the chapel is shown above.
This fabulous candlestick has survived and was sourced my myself recently in the Bretagne region of France.
Its an absolutely stunning authentic piece with a history to match.
Approx. max dims: H: 385mm, Base Dia: 160mm, Top Dia: 65mm
In very good antique condition. Obvious tarnishing to the silver, which adds a certain aesthetic to this fabulous candlestick. Some of the detailing on the base is missing as shown, but this doesn't detract from it's sheer beauty.
This is an original antique and may well show signs of use and wear commensurate with age.
