Antique French Calvados Jug. Circa early to mid 1800's.
Stunning earthenware jug.
French, circa early to mid 1800's.
This was specifically hand thrown for the purpose of storing and transporting 'Calvados'; an apple cider brandy; synonymous with Normandie in France.
Calvados is made from apple mainly; up to 200 varieties are harvested; but occasionally pear, is fermented in oak barrels for years; then stored in jugs or pitchers; often referred as 'eau-de-vie'; water of life!
Was often sold from pharmacies back in the day!
Beautifully hand thrown jug with large handle and original cork.
Wonderful 'earthy' tones mean that this unique piece will feel right at home wherever placed.
Simple but stunning.
I do have another calvados jug available; slightly larger.
Personally sourced from the Normandie region of France.
Approx. max. dims: H: 250mm, Dia: 180mm
In excellent antique; as found condition. a few very light marks to the surface but no damage or repairs. A few 'nibbles' to the rim of the spout shown but nothing that detracts from the splendour of this authentic piece.
This is an original antique and may well show signs of use and wear commensurate with age.
